Four mountain resort on the shores of Lake Superior with the biggest vertical in Minnesota. Lutsen itself was founded in the 1880s when a gentleman named C. A. A. Nelson arrived from Sweden and built a home where rented rooms starting a family hospitality tradition. The skiing was born in 1948 with two trails and a single rope tow powered by an old Ford car. Rapidly expanded in the latter 1990s with the number of trails doubling and lots of new facilities and accommodation options, including Adventure Mountain Tubing Park, the longest in America and probably the world at 400 metres (1300 feet). The resort believes it's the biggest in mid-West America, offering the experience of quality and standards of a Western US resort at as low as a third of the outlay for people living within a five hour drive of the area (and big savings even for those who don't). The resort offers skiing for all standards and has a large Ski Learning Park on Ullr mountain, as well as groomed in fun features across the terrain, and mogul fields, steeps, chutes and off-piste powder for experts.
